What is the Spot the mistake screen?

The Spot the mistake screen is an interactive challenge where learners are presented with an image of a scene or a piece of text such as a sentence or a paragraph that contains errors, mistakes, or hazards. The learners’ task is to identify and correct the mistakes in the image by clicking on the spot where the mistake is visible. On clicking an area that is a mistake, the learner is presented with a description of that item, including feedback that they have identified the mistake correctly.

When to use the Spot the mistake screen

There are many reasons to use the Spot the mistake challenge, here are just a few:

  • To identify grammatical errors or spelling mistakes in a piece of writing

  • To identify hazards in a workplace

  • To test a learner's attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of a particular subject

  • To highlight OH&S issues

  • To identify problems with a store display, or layout

  • COVID workplace issues

  • To show food hazards.

While this screen works well to help identify problems or hazards, you don’t necessarily need a series of mistakes to create an effective challenge – you can also ask your learners to spot positive elements in an image.

How to use the Spot the mistake screen

Step 1: To get started, add a new Lesson to your Course, or navigate to an existing one. Click the ‘Add screen’ button in the lesson on the course sidebar menu.

Step 2: Select ‘Spot the mistake’ from the screen select drawer under the ‘Challenge screens’ section.

Step 3: Give your screen a title and click the ‘Add screen’ button to confirm.

Step 4: Your new screen will appear with the screen title, an empty description field, and an empty image container.

To add an image, click the empty image container, or drag and drop your image onto it. Although you can add an image of any size, we recommend you add an image in landscape format so that your learners don’t have to scroll to find the mistakes.

Once you’ve added your image, you can start adding the mistakes. Click the ‘Add item’ button from the options menu at the bottom right of the screen. Clicking the button transforms your cursor into a plus that you can move into the desired location on your image. Click the location to set the position. You can now start adding the content into the text container. Just click the title to change it from ‘Untitled’. To add a description, click into the description field.

You will likely need to adjust the size of the clickable area so that it covers the mistake on the image correctly. To do this, click the pink bounding box and adjust the size by dragging the corners of the box. To rotate, drag the white node at the top of the box. See the example below:

Screen options

There are a number of options available for the Spot the mistake screen including:

  • Background color: This is useful when using a transparent image

  • SmartColor™ Scheme: each hotspot will automatically be allocated a color based on your workspace theme. Alternatively, you can change the colors individually

Screen switching

The Spot the mistake screen can be seamlessly switched with the Hotspot screen transforming your mistakes into identifiable hotspots that are checked off as the learner navigates through each item.
