What is the Pop quiz screen?
In a nutshell, the Pop quiz is a quiz that includes a range of typical question types you’d be familiar with. These include:
Multiple choice: Requires learners to answer a classic multiple-choice style question
True/False: Requires learners to answer a classic true/false style question
Short answer: Requires learners to answer a question by typing the answer in an available box
Tick correct: Requires learners to drag ticks onto the correct description or label
True/False (multiple): Requires learners to answer multiple classic true/false style questions
Drag multiple: Requires learners to drag potential answers to a question into waiting spaces
Match corresponding: Requires learners to match a list of options with their respective answers
Match sequence: Requires learners to match a list of options with their respective answers
Drop down: Requires learners to answer questions by selecting the answer from a drop-down menu
Multiple image choice: Requires learners to answer a question by selecting the correct answer from a range of images
Drag and drop: Requires learners to drag images onto their correct descriptions or labels
Although the Pop quiz screen may appear identical to the Quiz module, it has one distinct difference in that it is a formative assessment, whereas the Quiz module is a summative assessment. In Coassemble, a formative assessment is a quiz that evaluates how your learners are doing as they navigate through the course material. A summative assessment is a Quiz or Assignment that evaluates how much your learners have learned from the course.
As the Pop quiz is a formative assessment, it allows your learners to test their knowledge in practice quizzes throughout your course. Learners can retry the questions as many times as they wish without it affecting their grade.
Each time a learner attempts a question they’re provided feedback on whether the answer is correct.
When to use the Pop quiz screen
As a formative assessment, the Pop quiz is perfect for ending a topic, theme, or concept within your course to reinforce what your learners have just viewed.
How to use the Pop quiz screen
To get started, add a new Lesson to your Course, or navigate to an existing one. Click the ‘Add screen’ button in the lesson on the course sidebar menu.
Select ‘Pop quiz’ from the screen select drawer under the ‘Standard screens section.
Give your Pop quiz a title and click the ‘Add screen’ button to confirm.
By default, the Pop quiz screen displays your screen title, and an optional description field. To get started creating your Pop quiz, click the ‘Add question’ button.
A pop up appears with a dropdown menu asking you to select a question type. Click the button and select the question type you want to use.
Once you’ve chosen the question type you want to use, add the question you want to ask, followed by the answer options. Make sure you indicate which answer is correct by clicking the little checkmark next to the answer option.
Once you’re done, click the Save question button.
You can add as many questions as you like to a pop quiz, but as a rule of thumb, you should keep pop quizzes brief, using them to reinforce the learning of a single concept or topic within your course.
To add additional questions, click the ‘Add question’ button from the screen options toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
Advanced settings
There are a couple of advanced options you can configure for each question. To access these, click the ‘Advanced settings’ button at the bottom of the pop up modal.
Custom feedback
Coassemble provides a number of default responses to correct and incorrect answers. These can all be customized to suit your style from the Customize section in the application. The custom feedback section available in the advanced settings allows you to override the default response text for each individual question. You can add custom feedback for correct, and incorrect responses. Both of these fields are optional.
Create a pool of available answers
To make it harder for learners to answer pop quizzes without thinking about the questions, you can use the ‘Create a pool of available answers’ option to randomly select and display available answer options each time a learner tries to answer the question. For example, you could input 10 answer options, and have the system only display 5 at a time. Each time the learner tries the question, the options will be different, meaning it will be difficult for them to memorize the answers they got wrong on their previous attempt.
To use this feature, toggle the option on, and select the number of answers you would like to display.
