Video can be a powerful tool for online learning, as it allows learners to see and hear content in a way that can be more engaging than reading text or looking at static images.

What is the Video screen?

The Video screen allows you to showcase one or many videos on a single screen. You can upload videos from your desktop computer, or add videos from popular video sites like YouTube or Vimeo.

If you’re concerned about learners not watching videos, use the enforce completion option to ensure they watch every second! The enforce completion feature stores the progress for learners, so if you have long videos, they can come back and start where they left off.

When should you use the Video screen?

Video is a powerful tool for enhancing the online learner experience, and there are many reasons why you might want to use the video screen. For example, you may use the video screen:

  • When you want to add a personal touch by welcoming your learners with a message from a team lead or company executive.

  • When you want to demonstrate a process or concept that is difficult to explain in writing — video can be a great way to show someone how to do something, especially if it involves physical steps or visual components.

  • When you want to display YouTube or Vimeo videos as supporting material.

How do you use the Video screen?

Step 1: To get started, add a new Lesson to your Course, or navigate to an existing one. Click the 'Add screen' button in the lesson on the course sidebar menu.

Step 2: Select ‘Video’ from the screen select drawer.

Step 3: Give your screen a title and click the ‘Add screen’ button to confirm.

Step 4: By default, the Video screen will display the screen title, and an empty description field.

The video screen is virtually identical to the Slideshow screen meaning you can add as many videos as you like. Because of this, we’ve included a title and description field below each video. This can be hidden using the visibility settings found on the options toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

To add another video container, click the ‘Add slide’ button in the options toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

Adding videos using links

In many cases, your videos might be hosted on a popular video platform like YouTube or Vimeo.

Step 1: To add a video via a link, click the empty video container.

Step 2: Once you’ve clicked the container, a popup will appear asking you to choose either a file, or paste a link into the video URL input box. Paste a URL into the input box.

Step 3: After you’ve added your video, the video title field will be populated with the video title from its source — change this as you see fit and click the ‘Done’ button to confirm.

Note that for linked videos, you cannot add a custom thumbnail. This functionality is only available for videos uploaded to the Coassemble platform.

Uploading videos

The process for uploading a video is virtually the same as for adding a URL. Simply drag and drop your video file onto the empty video container, or click it to browse for the file on your computer.

After uploading your video, you may need to wait a few minutes before you can play it back because Coassemble needs to transcode the video into a number of different formats so that they are compatible with every browser and mobile device. This occurs in the background, so you can continue to build your course while you wait.

Force learners to watch an entire video

If you're subscribed to one of our Premium plans, you can force learners to watch an entire video before the screen is marked as complete.

To use this feature, simply toggle the 'Enforce completion' option ON after you've uploaded your video. You can do this retrospectively by clicking the edit button on each video you want to use this feature for.

Learners who are required to watch an entire video will know they've completed the video once the progress indicator below the video becomes solid. See the example in the image below:

Progress markers

If you have Progress markers toggled on for your workspace, your learners will now be required to view each slide in the Video screen. This means if you have multiple videos on the screen, then they must view each video. Note that this doesn't force them to watch the entire video, it only ensures that they've visited each slide in the slideshow.
