What is the Flashcards screen?

Everybody learns differently, and Flashcards have been proven to be an effective way to prompt your learners' memories using visual or verbal cues.

Flashcards in Coassemble allows you to display a series of cards supported by images and descriptions that can be flipped to display additional information. Learners click through each card to reveal information. After revealing the back of a card, they have the option of clicking ‘Got it’, or ‘Try again’. If they select ‘Try again’ the card will be displayed again once they get to the bottom of the deck. This provides learners the chance to keep trying until they’ve successfully memorized the content of all of the cards.

Watch the video below to see how you can use the Flashcards screen in Coassemble.

When to use the Flashcards screen

There are a number of reasons you would use the Flashcards screen, including:

  • When you want to prepare learners for an upcoming quiz

  • When you want display thought provoking scenarios and possible outcomes

  • When you want learners to memorize key terms and definitions

  • When you want learners to test themselves informally.

How to use the Flashcards screen

Step 1: To get started, add a new Lesson to your Course, or navigate to an existing one. Click the ‘Add screen’ button in the lesson on the course sidebar menu.

Step 2: Select ‘Flashcards’ from the screen select drawer under the ‘Interactive screens’ section.

Step 3: Give your screen a title and click the ‘Add screen’ button to confirm.

By default, your screen will appear with a title, an empty description field, and a single flashcard labeled ‘Untitled’.

The card front

The front of the card is used to pose a question, or trigger a concept. You can also present a scenario on the front of the card if you'd like learners to consider how they would respond.

The front of the card caters for an optional title, description, image, and background color. You can hide each of these elements, by clicking the visibility options button from the screen options toolbar at the bottom of the screen and unchecking them from the menu.

There are various options available for displaying images on the front of the card. The image can be displayed above the text, or behind it. When displayed above the text, there are two height settings available. Move your cursor to the bottom of the image to reveal the drag cursor and drag the image container down until it snaps into the second position. In either of these positions, you can choose to have the image ‘Fill’ the container, or for it to ‘Fit’ into it. Fitting will display the entire image, filling will make the image cover the entire container. In ‘Fill’ mode, you can reposition the image to make sure the parts of the image you want visible are displayed correctly.

If you keep dragging the image container past the second height point, the image will snap into background image mode. In this case, the image will appear behind the text.

The card back

The back of the card allows for a simple description, usually used to explain what was on the front of the card. To access the back of the card, click the flip card button.

Colors

The Flashcards screen uses Coassembles’ SmartColor™ feature to automatically pick a different color for each individual card based on your primary workspace color.

If you don't want your colors picked for you, don't worry, you can choose to make each card whatever color you like.
