What is Constructivism?
Constructivism is a learning theory, and has been a goal of the e-Learning industry for years. Basically, constructivism refers to the process of learning via interaction - when people construct their own knowledge, rather than simply absorb or memorise it, that knowledge is far better remembered.
Why do I need it?
When they play an active role in their own learning, people are more interested, more engaged, and more likely to want to keep learning. Quite simply, creating Constructivist e-Learning results in engaged Participants who retain their learning better and want to learn for longer.
How can I create Constructivist e-Learning content?
In order to achieve constructivist training, e-Learning needs to be interactive, engaging, and appealing. Coassemble's interactive presentation templates are a great way to achieve this goal.
For example, say you are trying to teach the definition of 5 words. You could list each word in a Text + Image slide, but this wouldn't engage your Participant in any way. Alternatively, you could use the Wheel Template and have your Participant click on the wheel to see each word. Then, you could have a Form Challenge Template that requires your Participant to enter the words they just learnt. By having your Participant actively click on each word, and then enter the words again, you're making sure that they are both interacting with their learning, and constructing their own learning.
To make sure the content you're creating is Constructivist, ask yourself a simple question for each Tile:
- Does this Tile require my Participant to interact by clicking or construct their own learning by typing in responses, or does it rely on them memorising content?
Too much interaction can be a bad thing - too many interactive templates in a row can overload your Participants. But if you're answering 'no' to the above question for every Tile in your Lesson or Course, you may want to reconsider your approach to Authoring.
